Your Skin,
Properly Assessed

Most facials start with a menu. This doesn’t.

You pick a treatment, you get the treatment, you go home. If it works, great. If it doesn’t, try a different one next time.

That’s not how we work.

Every skin treatment at Just Waxing starts with an assessment. We look at what’s actually happening with your skin — not what you think is happening, not what a quiz on a website told you. Then we prescribe. Treatment in clinic, homecare to follow through on. And we track how your skin responds over time.

It’s the same model a good dermatologist uses. We just happen to do it without the six-week waiting list.

Why that matters

Skin is reactive. What looks like sensitivity might be a compromised barrier. What looks like acne might be hormonal, or product-related, or both. Treating the symptom without understanding the cause gets you results that don’t last.

The assessment-first approach means we’re treating your skin, not a category your skin roughly fits into.

The clinical tools we use

We work with Nimue Skin Technology — a South African cosmeceutical brand used by skin clinics and medical aesthetic practices. It’s not available in pharmacies or on Amazon. It’s professional-only, and deliberately so.

Nimue’s formulations are built around a biological skin response model — essentially, working with how skin repairs and regulates itself rather than forcing short-term results that compromise long-term health.

We chose it because it aligns with how we approach skin: evidence-led, system-focused, results over time.

What to expect

  • First visit
Skin consultation and assessment. We’ll look at your skin, talk through your history, your concerns, your lifestyle. You’ll leave with a clear picture of what we recommend and why.
  • In-clinic treatment
Prescribed to your skin, not picked off a laminated list. Protocols adjust as your skin responds.
  • Homecare
The in-clinic work only does so much. We’ll prescribe what you use at home to carry the results forward. Nothing you don’t need.
  • Ongoing
Your skin changes. Seasons, hormones, stress, age. We adapt the plan as it does.

FAQ

Do I have to have a consultation before any treatment?

For a first facial or skin treatment, yes — we’ll always start with an assessment. It doesn’t add much time, and it means the treatment you receive is actually suited to your skin. Going straight into a treatment without it would be a disservice to you and to the results.

I’ve had facials before and they’ve never really done much. Is this different?
Probably, yes — but it depends why previous treatments didn’t work. Often it’s because the treatment was chosen without enough context about the skin. Sometimes it’s a homecare gap: the in-clinic work is undone within a week because nothing supports it at home. Sometimes it’s the wrong active ingredients for that skin type. The consultation is partly there to understand what’s been tried before and why it may not have landed.
What’s the difference between cosmeceutical and a regular skincare brand?
Cosmeceutical sits between cosmetic and pharmaceutical. The active concentrations are higher than retail skincare — high enough to actually affect the skin at a cellular level — but they’re not prescribed medicines. The term isn’t formally regulated, so it gets misused. In Nimue’s case, the formulations are backed by clinical research and the brand is positioned explicitly for professional use. That’s the distinction that matters.
Why Nimue specifically? Are there other brands you could use?
Yes, there are other reputable professional skincare brands — Dermalogica, IMAGE, Environ, among others. We use Nimue because we’ve found it consistently effective across a range of skin types and concerns, and because the brand’s philosophy aligns with ours: address the cause, support barrier function, produce results that last. It’s a considered choice, not a default.
Is Nimue suitable for sensitive skin?
It has a specific sensitive skin protocol and several products formulated for compromised or reactive skin. Sensitivity is often a symptom of something else — a damaged barrier, an inappropriate product history, an underlying condition — and the assessment will usually identify what’s driving it. We’d rather treat the cause than just avoid the irritation.
What about darker skin tones?
Nimue’s formulations are designed to be effective across the Fitzpatrick scale, including deeper skin tones. Treatments involving exfoliation or active ingredients do require more careful calibration for melanin-rich skin — risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a real consideration. It’s one of the things the assessment specifically accounts for.
Can I buy Nimue products to use at home without coming in for treatment?
We don’t retail Nimue products without a prior consultation. This isn’t gatekeeping — it’s because the products are active enough that using the wrong ones for your skin type can cause problems. Homecare prescribed after an assessment will be appropriate for your skin. Homecare guessed at, or chosen from a website, probably won’t be.
How many treatments will I need before I see results?
Depends on the concern and the starting point. Some people notice a visible difference after the first treatment. For concerns like pigmentation, congestion, or skin texture, a course of treatments produces meaningfully better results than a single session — typically somewhere between four and six, spaced a few weeks apart. We’ll give you a realistic picture at consultation rather than a number that sounds good.
Do the treatments hurt?
Most don’t. Depending on the protocol and your skin’s current condition, you might experience some tingling, heat, or mild discomfort during active treatments. Nothing significant. The consultation covers this, and any treatment can be adjusted.
What should I do (or not do) before a treatment?
Avoid heavy exfoliation or active skincare products in the 48 hours before. Come in with clean skin if possible. Don’t book a resurfacing treatment the week before a big event — there can be a short purging or adjustment phase. Specific prep guidance will be given when you book.
Is this just for faces?
Predominantly, yes — the Nimue protocols are facial-focused. We also offer body treatments separately. If you have a specific concern outside the face, mention it at consultation and we’ll tell you honestly whether we can help or point you somewhere that can.
I want to start but I don’t know which treatment to book.

Book the Diagnostic.

That’s exactly what it’s for. You don’t need to know what treatment you want before you come in — that’s our job.

Understanding your skin barrier — and why most skincare ignores it

The skin barrier — the stratum corneum — is the outermost layer of skin. Its job is to keep moisture in and irritants, pathogens, and environmental aggressors out. When it’s healthy, skin looks and behaves well: balanced, resilient, able to handle active ingredients without reacting.

When it’s compromised, almost everything else becomes harder. Products sting or irritate. Sensitivity increases. Breakouts become more frequent. Pigmentation is harder to shift.

A lot of skincare — including some high-profile professional brands — works by aggressively exfoliating or forcing cell turnover, which produces a short-term glow but repeatedly stresses the barrier. The skin looks better for a day or two, then the cycle repeats.

Nimue’s approach centres on what they call the Biological Skin Normalisation Concept — essentially, restore barrier function first, then treat the concern. It’s a different order of operations, and it’s why results tend to be more stable over time.

Why homecare is not optional

In-clinic treatments are typically performed once every three to six weeks. The other days, your skin is on its own.

What happens in that window determines whether the in-clinic work compounds or gets undone. The wrong products can undo an hour of treatment in a few days — not through dramatic reaction, but quietly: barrier disruption, wrong actives at the wrong phase, products working against each other.

Prescribed homecare is a continuation of the treatment plan, not an upsell. We keep it minimal — what your skin actually needs, in the right sequence. Some clients come in with a shelf full of products they’ve accumulated over the years. Part of our job is often simplifying that.

A note on skin and age

Skin changes significantly across decades. Hormone shifts, slower cell turnover, reduced collagen production, cumulative UV exposure — these are all real and all treatable to different degrees.

We see clients across a wide age range, and the treatment approach is always calibrated to where their skin currently is, not where it was. The goal isn’t reversal — it’s skin that’s healthy, cared for, and appropriate to the person in front of us.

If you’re coming to us in your twenties, you’re building a foundation. Forties or fifties, we’re usually addressing several things at once and managing change. Both are valid starting points. Neither requires you to know what you want before you come in.
